When my son was a young four-year-old I wanted to do an Easter egg treasure hunt for him but he couldn’t read yet so I knew I had to do something different.

When I was in college I had a roommate who’s family did a scavenger every Easter.

Yes, as adults, her family did this.

I loved the idea!

So, I’ve always kept it in my mind and was super excited when my son was old enough to finally put one together.

Like I mentioned, I knew I’d have to do it differently than writing out clues.

I wanted him to be able to do it all by himself.

I racked my brain until I realized exactly how I could do it 🙂

A Treasure Hunt for Toddlers

Putting it together

What I realized is that I could use pictures!

Right?!

Since he couldn’t read yet I figured a picture would work well.

He knows what objects are and where they are in the house so theoretically he could do it all on is own.

How awesome is that?

And how empowering?

Here are just a few suggestions of what I used.

A picture of a bed for a bedroom.

Picture of a television for the living room.

A picture of a table for the dining room.

So, of course, this is totally customizable!

Depending on how many rooms/eggs you have or want to use will determine how many pictures you’ll need to find.

Supplies for your treasure hunt for toddlers

  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Access to a printer
  • Internet access/Word
  • Final treasure

How to Start

Number of eggs

First, figure out how many eggs you’d like your little to find.

I wouldn’t go too crazy.

We did about 10.

Placement

Then it was a matter of trying to figure out where to place them.

Here come the pictures.

Think of well-known places in your house.

Like the kitchen table, fireplace, bathroom.

You can even use two or three different places within the same room.

For example, a t.v., a couch and a fireplace can all be used just don’t put them after each other.

The route

Next, decide what ‘route’ you want them to take.

I wanted my little guy to get as much energy out as possible.

This meant I did my best to pick rooms that are on opposite sides of the house as much as I could.

Meaning, we started in our bedroom with a clue to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, he found a clue for the bathroom.

In the bathroom, there was the clue for the kitchen.

And so forth until you’ve reached the place you want to have the final treasure.

How to find Easter Treasure Hunt for Toddler Clues

ClipArt

If you have Word or another document program find their image section.

Then find images that match your places as best as possible.

For example, I used a toothbrush for the bathroom and an exercise machine for our workout area.

Stock Photos

I use Pixabay.com for a lot of my photo needs.

Again, just type in what you’re looking for.

You can even choose between ‘real’ photos and illustrations.

Google It

Of course, Google has everything, even a clipart section so it should be easy to find what you need there.

Putting it together

I copy and pasted each image I needed onto one single sheet.

Once printed, I cut them out and placed them into their own egg.

Then it was just a matter of putting the eggs in the right spot.

Remember, the toothbrush doesn’t go in the bathroom, it goes in the room your little one will be in before going to the bathroom, etc.

Find a time when they aren’t in the house or when they’re taking a nap to place the eggs.

This way they can be out in plainer view to make it even easier for your toddler.

Enjoy

That’s it!

Then you just get to enjoy watching your toddler run around the house finding the eggs and of course their final treasure.

If you need to help, don’t hesitate.

Actually, why not tag along so you can fully take in their joy 🙂
