Positive
Live life to the fullest, and focus on the positive.
∼Matt Cameron

Do you consider yourself to be a positive person?

Are you a half full or half empty person?

I personally consider myself positive, fully rooted in reality lol!!

I hope for the best while fully preparing for the worst.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

I’m one of those people who will go through, what feels like at least, every single possible outcome of something, so that I am as prepared as I can be for a situation.

I have also found myself lately being one of those people who tries not have any an expectations of anything or anyone realizing that things change all the time and most of the time it’s out of your control.

And that leads us to our first step we can take to being more positive in our day to day lives:
Manage your Expectations

Be aware of yours!

Understand that having them too high could be an easy recipe for disaster.

Now, I’m not talking about not having any expectations at all but I’ve found that when I try not to rely so much on my high expectations I’m much happier.

For example:

Hoping I’ll hit every green light would be a high expectation.

Not having the thought at all and just driving would be best.

But just in case you’ve had the thought, how about this: If I could have just one green light that would be awesome but if I have none then I’ll just sit back and enjoy the music playing in the car!

So now, when you’ve hit every red light, instead of being angry and mad, you have a great back-up plan.

And maybe, just maybe, you are even happier that you hit the red lights because now you’ve heard your favorite song 🙂

Know you are in Control

Understanding what you do and do not have control over is key!

If you can’t control a situation you can still control you thoughts and feelings about it. See example above 🙂

And then there’s one of my favorite quotes :

The problem is not the problem, it’s your attitude about the problem.

Just today, was one of those days!

I was moody and cranky and I let it affect me all afternoon.

Not only that but I also let it affect how I interacted with my little guy.

I’m not proud of it but I let my attitude get the best of me!

Now, how do you overcome your attitude when you’re dealing with a hard time in your life?

Here’s a great quote to get us started!

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.
∼Robert Louis Stevenson
Life is about taking Steps

Everything in life builds on itself.

The lessons we learn as we grow up help contribute to who we become.

You may not be where you want to be right now in life and that’s o.k. (there’s some self talk for me too! :))

I’ve talked to many a ‘grown-up’ in my life who are still trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up!

Life is constantly changing, and that’s a beautiful thing!

No, it’s not always fun, or happy, or positive but….

Seasons always Change

Our seasons of life are always changing.

Just when you’re getting the hang of college, you graduate.

Once you settle into your new apartment, you get a roommate.

You’re finally married, then kids come along.

Life is a roller coaster, you might as well enjoy it!

Tweet this!

Understanding that ‘this too will pass’ has been huge for me.

I know that in the moment it doesn’t feel like it but….

Time will Pass

Give yourself time to go through what you’re going through.

Yup, I said it! Allow yourself time to be ‘down’.

But, as I’ve heard some people say – just don’t stay there and unpack! 🙂

Life is all about opposites.

And as much as I don’t like it, if we don’t have the down’s we can’t appreciate the up’s!

I’m not saying it’s going to be easy but give yourself time!

I was in New York City when 9/11 happened. And let me tell you, time really has been one of the only things that’s really helped me.

I’ve talked to people, written things down, prayed about it, moved closer to family but time is a wonderful gift to give yourself!

So In Conclusion

Staying positive in life, at work, during hard times, isn’t always going to be possible!

And if you try too hard to do it it may actually backfire on you!!!

Give yourself some space to have your bad days, your negative moments… just don’t unpack – right 😉

Otherwise, remember, your thoughts are controlled by you. Don’t let someone or something get you down just because of their actions, in-actions or words.

And don’t let your memory play a part in not staying positive! Check out these 7 Surprising Mantras to Boost Your Memory. You won’t regret it!

Having an overall positive attitude is the goal 🙂
