Do you love legos?
Have you heard the stories about parents tripping over them in the middle of the night?
I will admit, they do get scattered all over our house.
But I tell you, my son loves them, I love them and I love that he loves them.
CAUTION: some kits contain small pieces. Not suitable for younger kids. Parental supervision for the youngest.
Reasons legos are great
Colors
They come in lots of different colors so there’s an endless supply to be creative.
For the youngest, you can start practicing recognizing colors with the bricks.
Simply being able to point out – this one is red, this one is blue, etc., is a great fun way to get started with learning colors.
Then you can move into separating them into piles of the same color.
Sizes
Did you know there are larger brick sets out there?
Same as with the colors, have them make piles of the same size pieces. Not necessarily the same shape.
Shapes
This time have them separate them into the same shape, but not necessarily the same color. Mix it up: try the same shape, color, and size, or just the same color and size but not the shape 🙂

Imagination
I can’t tell you how many different types of ships R has built and how many times he’s had us build some with him.
Actually, we just had a building session so now they can battle lol !!!
Sometimes we will grab just a handful and work with only what we have, other times we’ll have our whole big pile of legos to dig through and try to make something out of nothing.
It’s interesting, he can build so fast because he’s not worried about it, he’s just enjoying the process.
While, when we adults do it, we take longer because we’re thinking too much lol.
I’m trying to get better but it takes time.
It’s great mind practice!
Following instructions
When you buy the kits they come with an instruction manual.
They’re pretty straightforward but if you accidentally skip a step you’ll regret it 🙂
The older the kits get the more you have to pay attention!
Focus
Speaking of paying attention.
You learn that you really need to focus on following the instructions so you don’t skip a step.
Feeling of accomplishment
Once you finish a kit you really do get a sense of accomplishment!
Whether it’s a big one or a small one it feels good to see the finished product.
All ages
Legos have been great for this three-generation household.
Not only is it something all of us can do but it’s been good for his grandparents too.
It gives them a chance to use their brains in a new way.
Practicing following instructions but then also the open-ended play to really get their imagination working!
Hand-Eye Coordination
It’s such a great exercise in hand-eye coordination.
Motor Skills
Moving those bricks around.
Finding the correct spot to place them and attach them to another brick is great work for fine motor skills.
