These 5 Filipino (Visayan) foods are a must-try!
First, let me clarify a few things.
In the Philippines, there are three major areas that consist of multiple islands.

Luzon is the northern area.
The Visayas are the middle islands.
And Mindanao contains the most southern islands that make up the Philippines.
As with a lot of countries, different regions’ dishes can taste extremely different.
I found this to be the case with Filipino food.
I’ve gone to several Filipino restaurants in the US and always find the food tastes different than what I’m used to.
Partially, I guess, because my mom makes her own version.
But also because typically the restaurants are based on the Luzon style.
So, even if you’ve tried Filipino food I encourage you, if you find a place, or are going to the Visayas region of the Philippines to try these dishes because you will not be disappointed!!!

Filipino Foods You Must Try
Lumpia
Think of an egg roll but the Visayas version is typically thinner and longer.
They are usually filled with vegetables and pork.
Pancit
A noodle dish with vegetables and meat.
Lechon
Very similar to the Hawaiian Kalua pig.
Although they are roasted differently the basics are the same.
It’s a delicious roasted pig and you’ll definitely want to make sure you try the skin.
Siopao
This is a steamed bun with different fillings.
I like mine with pork, it’s usually a sweet-ish pork filling, but you can find them in different varieties.

Ensaymada
O.k., so this is one of those items I always make sure I get when we visit our family in the Philippines.
It’s a type of bread, think of a roll or bun but it has butter and sugar on top 🙂
It is so good, it’s hard to stop eating them!!!
A definite try the next time you find yourself visiting the Philippines or a Filipino restaurant.
There you have it!
Even if you’ve tried one of these dishes before, and didn’t really enjoy it, but have a chance to in the Visayas style, do so!
You won’t be disappointed!!!!
