One of my son’s 1st-grade history projects was building a Roman road.
They were learning about Rome and how they were innovative by inventing the road.
Roman was able to connect their empire by building these excellent roads!
And these were not just simple roads.
They didn’t just clear our trees and rocks to make a path, they actually used several layers of different materials to build them.
Did you know that they are still around today?
His project was to build a road and we decided to make an edible one….. of course, lol 🙂

We used what we had at home with the semi-exception of the pudding.
I had to find a DIY recipe and we used that.
Now, in terms of actually making it, you have two options.
Either use a clear cup of some sort to do it and be able to see the layers.
Or you can do our version in a 13×9 baking pan. 🙂

The Roman Road
The Ingredients
- Graham crackers= sand
- Butter
- Oreos= crushed rocks
- Cake= soil
- Pudding = cement
- M&ms = cement
- Scooby snacks = stone slabs
The Process
First, we baked a chocolate cake to be the soil and surrounding ground.
After it was baked and cool we cut out a cross-section that we wanted to be the road.
Then we started adding the layers.
First, mix the crushed-up graham crackers with the butter.
On top of the cake (the ground/soil), you place a good layer of this graham cracker butter mixture.
This first layer is to represent the compacted sand.
Next, they put a layer of crushed rock (crushed Oreos).
The next two layers are mixtures.
Your first mixture will be some vanilla pudding with m&m’s mixed in.
This is your cement and gravel layer.
I actually just placed ours on top so they wouldn’t bleed any more than necessary.
Then I mixed the pudding with the rest of the crushed-up graham crackers and then some more m&m’s to make the cement, gravel, and sand layer.
Your last layer is the stone slabs.
We used scooby snacks but we debated on using chocolate chip or sugar cookies.
Of course, anything will work, like vanilla wafers or any other sweet cookie you have.
Simply layer them on top like stone slabs and viola!
You now have a delicious and well-built Roman road 🙂
Enjoy!
Roman Road Dessert
A multi-layered dessert replicating an ancient Roman road.
- 13×9 baking dish (or similar)
- 1 -2 pkg graham crackers
- 1 sleeve oreos
- vanilla pudding
- m & ms
- scooby snacks
- 1/3 cup melted butter
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- oil ((for cake))
- eggs ((for cake))
Bake the box cake per instructions
After it's completely cooled cut out the section you'd like to be the road. Enjoy the cake you removed or freeze to save for another time.
Crush 1 pkg of graham crackers and mix about 3/4 with the melted butter. This will make your first layer of the road (the sand layer). Spread it evenly along the bottom of the baking dish.
Crush the sleeve of Oreos and layer most of them on top of the graham/ butter mixture. This is your crushed rocklayer.
Next, either mix some M&Ms into the vanilla pudding before layering it on top of the Oreos, or put the pudding in first then place M&Ms into the pudding. (Cement/gravel layer)
Take the remaining crushed graham crackers and Oreos and mix it into more vanilla pudding. (cement/sand/gravel layer)
Finally, place your scooby snacks on top to finish off your road!
Let chill, then serve! Enjoy!
- Add a ditch on the side and add blue M&M’s to it for water.
- Add some green M&M’s to the side of the road for trees and bushes.
- We even added some little people figurines walking on the road!
