These are two of my all-time favorite camping recipes ever!

Not only are they fun, but they are also delicious and easy to make!

I’m talking about ash cakes and hobo stew.

Have you ever heard of the first?

And the second, I bet you have but maybe not the way we make it 🙂

Camping Recipe #1- Ash Cakes

O.k., I know what you’re thinking.

Why would I want ash cakes?

That doesn’t sound appealing at all!

Agreed, but hear me out.

I took a wilderness survival class years ago and they call this a mountain man breakfast.

It only takes a few ingredients and you don’t need any special equipment.

We made them and I was in love, lol 🙂

All you need is some flour, water, baking powder, and salt. Oh, and of course a fire that has burned for awhile.

When mixed together they’ll create a little dough ball.

At this point, you could always add some sugar, cinnamon, fruit, nuts, chocolate, really whatever you’d like to put in the middle.

Ash cakes are a fast and delicious breakfast or dessert when camping!

Tweet this!

Place it on the white ashes, flipping at least once, until it’s cooked.

Voila, you’ve got a delicious breakfast or dessert!

Ash Cakes (Mountain Man Breakfast)

A delicious and easy-to-make breakfast (or dessert) for any camping or hiking trip. P.S. You can make it at home too 🙂

  • 3 tbsp Flour
  • 4 tbsp Water
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • Any extras you'd like (chocolate, nuts, fruits)
  1. Make sure the fire has burned long enough that you have hot coals/white ashes to lay the cakes on.

  2. Mix all ingredients in a small container until you've formed a dough ball.

  3. If you're adding extras, make a well in the middle of the dough and place the extras inside.

  4. Close all the extras inside the dough so they don't spill out and make into a patty of sorts.

  5. Lay patty on hot coals/white ashes for about four minutes or until browned then flip.

  6. Cook the other side for another four minutes or until browned.

  7. Carefully removed cakes from coals and let cool.

  8. Enjoy!

Camping Recipe #2- Hobo Stew

Now for dinner, one of my favorite camping recipes was hobo stew.

This is one of those tin foil camping meals that you just can’t go wrong with making.

No, it’s not a stew in the traditional sense but it is so delicious!!!

The ingredient list for this one is as long or short as you’d like it to be.

Basically, it’s meat (typically ground beef of some sort) and veggies.

Our typical hobo stew consisted of ground beef formed into a hamburger type patty, then potatoes, carrots, and onions, with some salt and pepper to taste.

Wrap all of it in foil, throw it in the fire and let it cook until everything is done, around 30-45 minutes depending on how thick you’ve cut your veggies.

This is easily one of the best and easiest foil packet meals for camping you’ll ever come across.

You’ll need to let it cool off a bit but then grab your fork and enjoy your feast!

Hobo Stew

An easy and delicious meal to enjoy while camping or hiking.

  • Ground beef
  • Vegetables (carrots, potatoes, onions, etc)
  • Seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc)
  1. Cut all vegetables into bite-size pieces. (The smaller you cut them the faster the cooking time)

  2. Form your meat into patties. (Don't make them too thick or again it'll take longer to cook)

  3. Place enough veggies and one patty in a large square of aluminum foil for one person.

  4. Season with salt, pepper, etc.

  5. Fold foil together so that the food is completely sealed in.

  6. Put the sealed packets into the fire.

  7. Cook for about 35 minutes or until all the ingredients are cooked to your liking.

  8. Carefully take the packets out of the fire and carefully open them up.

  9. Enjoy!

The amount you’ll need of each items is completely up to you and your group.

If you’ll have four people and everyone will eat about a quarter pound burger you’ll need 1 lbs of ground beef to start off with.

If everyone loves their potatoes but not so much carrots maybe one potato per person but only one carrot to split between everyone.

So customize this for what fits for your group and your outing and enjoy 🙂

Ready to go camping 🙂
